Nigerian female weightlifter and member of Fountain of Freedom Cherubim and Seraphim Church (Itedo Omnira), Adijat Olarinoye, has added a new feat as a newly appointed member of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa Athletes’ Commission (ANOCA).

The 23-year-old, in August 2022, had won the first gold medal for Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She recorded a total of 203kg in the women’s 55kg weightlifting event which is a new Commonwealth Games record.

The athlete soon added another feather in her cap after being appointed as one of the 12 athletes on the ANOCA’s board.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee, in a congratulatory message by its Secretary-General, Tunde Popoola, praised the athlete’s achievement, adding that her appointment was a pride to the NOC.

Olarinoye in reaction to the appointment told Acts of Seraphs that she was happy and was ready to give her best.

She said, “I thank the Almighty God, I’m happy to be appointed. I can learn and also show them what I have got. Many challenges have come my way but I treat them accordingly.”

On March 11 and 12, 2023, over 100 athlete representatives from more than 50 National Olympic Committee (NOC) Athletes’ Commissions (ACs) from throughout Africa attended the ANOCA Conference in Algiers, Algeria, where the appointment was accepted.

Gaby Ahrens, a bronze medalist in shooting at the Commonwealth Games, and Victoire Ngon Ntame, a volleyball player from Cameroon, were chosen as Chair and Vice-Chair of the ANOCA executive board, respectively, outside of the forum.
