Members of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church have made an impressive mark at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, clinching multiple medals while representing Lagos State.
These include Oluwasegun Ajao, Florence Olarinoye and Ronke Olarinoye.
Seraph Oluwasegun competed in the arm wrestling category and emerged as the top athlete in Nigeria, winning two gold medals.
Before the festival, Seraph Oluwasegun was already recognised as the second-best arm wrestler in Africa, having secured two silver medals at the African Armwrestling Championship.
In weightlifting, Seraph Florence won a silver medal in the 59kg category, earning her the position of second-best in the competition. Florence is the niece of renowned Nigerian weightlifter Seraph Adenike Olarinoye, who brought home Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Remarkably, Florence also made history as an athlete whose mother competed alongside her at the same event. Her mother, Ronke, who is the elder sister of Seraph Adenike, secured both gold and bronze medals in the 45kg weightlifting category.
Speaking with Acts of Seraphs, Prophet Oluyinka Durosinmi, Spiritual Head of Fountain of Freedom C&S Church, where the athletes worship, described their achievements as extraordinary.
He also expressed profound pride in the glory they brought not only to Lagos State but to the church as well.
“This is not just a win for the athletes or for Lagos State. It is a win for the entire body of Christ. They have shown that spirituality and excellence can go hand in hand,” he said.
Beyond their athletic achievements, the cleric said they were known for their devotion in the church.
He said, “Segun is the head usher. He is a devoted member of the church. He handles both media and ushering duties, and on Saturdays, he cleans the church and its surroundings. Even if no one else shows up for cleaning, he does it alone.”
“Florence is also one of the devoted teenagers in the church. She is humble, dedicated, and focused. Her mother, Olaronke, attends the Celestial Church, but she worships with us periodically.”
