Christians have the right to question their leaders – Osinbajo

Speakers at the recently held national symposium of the Church Wardens of Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Surulere District Headquarters Ayo Ni O, have made recommendations on how best the tripartite roles of the State, Society, and the Church can birth a new Nigeria that everyone would be proud of.

The event with the theme, “Beacon of Hope For A New Nigeria” and held at the church premises, witnessed the presence of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola; Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Isiaka Oladapo Amao; the Shepherd Disciples of Christ Ministry, Special Apostle Pastor Femi Soyemi; Ms. Ibijoke Faborode, Founder & CEO, ElectHER and Mrs. Khadijah Okunnu-Lamidi, 2023 Presidential Aspirant.

Also present were the Supreme Head of C&S Unification Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Solomon Adegboyega Alao JPil, his wife, as well as the elders of the District Headquarters.

In his keynote speech, the vice president said every Christian has the duty and a charge by God to challenge the moral conscience of leadership when the leaders do not live up to the standards of their offices.

The Vice President who was represented by the Chaplain of Aso Rock, Pastor Seyi Malomo, said the Nigerian people, especially the young population represent the beacon of hope for a new Nigeria.

“The Nigerian people, particularly the young people today, are daring great odds to take their place under the sun, represent the beacon of hope for a new Nigeria. We must rise up to meet them with the values required to build a sustainable future, and inspire them toward the moral imperative of doing good and honest work to the best of their ability, as a service to humanity and to God.

“Surely there is a future and a hope (Prov. 23:18) for Nigeria, and what is the church but the great bastion of this hope. We have a duty and a charge by God Himself to challenge the moral conscience of leadership when we do not live up to the standards of our office.

“We have the ears and the hearts of the people. We must inspire them through our own great example to look to the future with hope, and to find that hope in their God given abilities, in the strength of their character, in the enduring value of honest work and a patriotic commitment to the overall well-being of the Nigerian nation.”

Osinbajo added that every voice must rise in the fervency of hope at this moment in our national life like never before.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, on his part said a sound foundation for Nigeria is not too late, adding that the ultimate goal of the society is to promote good and happy life for its individuals.

Represented by Air Vice Marshall I. G Lubo, he said the society does not exist independently without the individuals. The individual lives and acts within the society.

AVM Lubo who stated that Nigerians are generally progressive, resilient and peace loving, added that the State, the Society and the Church must work together to realize the New Nigeria the citizens desire.

The Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola said the citizens have the right to complain about the leadership, but should desist from using derogatory words about the country.

While admitting that the country has challenges, he said, “In order to overcome our challenges, we need to start accepting responsibilities than waiting for miracles.”

In a strongly worded presentation, Special Apostle Shoyemi charged spiritual leaders to teach their followers what is right. Speaking on the role of the church, he said the way out of the country’s problem is for the people to walk in the way of righteousness and the fear of God.

“To the spiritual fathers and leaders – the Apostles, the Prophets, the Evangelists, the Pastors and the Teachers of the Word, the grace given to us is to instruct, admonish, guide and teach the people to do what is right. Like the voice of the one crying in the wilderness, we must not hold our peace. We must lift up our voices to warn the people of the dangers ahead if they fail to change course. There is so much idolatry, rituals, killing, looting, and wickedness of the highest order in this nation.”

According to him, the way out of our current problem is for the people to walk in the way of righteousness and the fear of God.

He added that God has blessed Nigeria with much resources and the blessings come with responsibility.
