How We Balanced Faith And Academics To Make First Class – Seraph Graduates

Seraph Olamide Famuwagun

Seraphs Deborah Afuwape and Omolade Oba have bagged first-class honours degrees from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, while citing a balance between their Christian faith and academics in achieving the feat.

The two graduates who shared their inspiring stories with ACTS OF SERAPHS claimed to have achieved the distinction against all odds and with dedication and perseverance.

Afuwape and Oba who were part of the 2023 graduating set of the institution had a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.53 and 4.54 respectively.

Afuwape, a native of Ogun State with a degree in Business Administration, attributed her academic success to hardwork and discipline.

The young Seraph said, “I attribute my success to my unwavering determination from my very first year to graduate with a first-class degree, coupled with my passion for academic excellence. Discipline, focus, prayer, and hard work were my guiding principles throughout my journey.”

Actively involved in the Cherubim and Seraphim campus fellowship, Afuwape served as the Assistant General Coordinator and later the General Coordinator, contributing to various units.

Oba Omolade, a native of Kogi State defied expectations by graduating with first-class honours in Law.

Speaking on the turning point of her academic sojourn, Omolade said, “Everything changed in my 400l when I started having A’s in all my courses, I had a perfect G.P of 5.0 twice concurrently. I had 12 A’s in a row”.

She also highlighted the importance of a positive mindset, rejecting societal limitations, and believing in achieving excellence.

“I don’t think there’s anything special I did and others haven’t done. But one thing I know for sure is my mindset. I had a different mindset. I don’t believe in what the masses say, ‘Law is hard’ and ‘An executive cannot graduate with a first class’ All lies! I believe with God all things are possible,” she said.

Both graduates emphasized the importance of time management and prioritizing commitments.

According to Omolade, a triangle lifestyle was what she adopted while managing her time at school.

She said, “It was not easy but I made sure I dedicated time to each respectively. There are days we had programs in church back to back and I won’t be able to read at all, but I would cover up by reading straight up for 4 days without engaging in other activities. I don’t do parties, I don’t fancy going for sleepovers or hangouts. So it was a triangle lifestyle – Church, school and my house. Most importantly, I read ahead of each semester. I think that helped me a lot. I read during the semester break, that was so helpful.”

On her part, Afuwape revealed that she maintained a balance between academic responsibilities and commitment to the fellowship.

“I approached the task with discipline, prioritization, and time management. By maintaining a balance between my academic responsibilities and my commitment to the fellowship, I ensured that none of them suffered. Additionally, prayer and hard work were essential in helping me to navigate this balance successfully.”
