From the Publisher’s Desk
In the last twenty four hours, Nigerian singer and songwriter, Tiwa Savage, has generously enjoyed prominence in the Cherubim & Seraphim social media space having made a live video where she sang quite a number of our hymnals.
But not only did the video take our space by storm, we also deployed our media apparatus to make it trend, perhaps as a way of communicating to the world that our own hymnal now appeals to non Seraphs. Ditto for renowned Tiwa Savage.
Much as there is no reservation of sort for giving the video such publicity, one cannot but lay bare the subtle message behind it; not for any reason but for the sake of those whom we call our own.
While Tiwa may have done the freestyle session which is apparently the in thing on Instagram these days; courtesy of Covid-19 induced lockdown, she has also succeeded in reminding some Seraphs of how proud they could be of their heritage. These are the ones who, out of the blues, deemed it a pleasure to share the video without delay.
That said, we have only helped the already made female artiste to further promote her brand to all and sundry, even to those who had little or no knowledge about her before now. After all, we enjoyed the euphoria of telling those who care to know that Tiwa Savage has a soft spot for our hymnal.
Reality check
As you may wish to know, this piece is not for everybody but for those who find themselves wanting as regards the message it communicates. The number of shares the video had amassed since it made its way into our space could best be described as unprecedented. Same with corresponding reactions.
Thus, the reality check here queries how much energy we put to promote our gospel sensations having done the same to the Tiwa Savage’s video. It also queries how much we use our social media space to propagate their songs.Kudos to those who have consistently push their cause through their various platforms. But for those who shared Tiwa Savage’s video, but barely share that of our own gospel artistes, this may be the right time to start doing the needful. We can deploy that same energy to put our own on the spotlight.
It’s not enough to fantasize about how a secular musician make do with our hymnals, but how much we revel in the works of our gospel artistes and make them dominate the public space. This is not to mean that we should call the bluff of anyone who tries to identify with us in whatever way. Besides, we could tell that Tiwa is in one way or the other connected with the C&S fold with the way she seamlessly dished out those numbers. But the point here remains a function of paying much attention to what comes from the inside compared to what comes from the outside.
We all have the liberty to do what pleases us with our social media spaces. Meanwhile, the postulation that an affection to one is an affection to all simply lend credence to an undeniable fact that If they do well in their respective capacities, it has a way of rubbing off on us generally as Seraphs. It is, therefore, our desire that they excel in their crafts and make exploits even beyond our wildest imagination. We can do well by encouraging them in the same measure we gave the Tiwa video and much more. This is part of our own quota to ensure that they get the desired publicity. Mind you, they also need our prayers to stay true to their cause.
If the evolution of Seraph gospel music is anything to go by, the new breed of artistes that currently dot the C&S space would not only consolidate on what their predecessors had done, but certainly give the fold a deserving recognition in the global gospel scene.
